THE DATAWINDOW
It really needs no other introduction than that. It’s still the fastest and easiest component for data access around. You may have been required to supplement your PowerBuilder development with C# or Java over the past few years, and if you’re like everyone else in that boat, you’ve missed the DataWindow. Badly.
We’ve added many enhancements to the beloved DataWindow in this release. There are new features for the Win32 ataWindow and there are new features for the completely re-written WPF DataWindow. Let’s start with what’s new for .NET. We’ve added the ability to access the data in all the DataWindow buffers while in the debugger. Yes, we cheered for this one, too. We’ve also added auto-size width functionality to complement the auto-size height that we’ve always had, so now there is Auto-Width column support for the Grid style DataWindows. And, we’ve updated the graph functionality with a sophisticated new Candlestick presentation style, something used extensively in the financial and medical industries. We’ve also enhanced other DataWindow functionality as well tomake your life even easier, so you can bring your applications to market even faster. We’ve added AutoWidth Column for the grid style for the Win32 DataWindow too, as well as new properties for DataWindow Controls, support for RTF, images, and user-drawn controls. And, you can now share datasources with a .NET application. Many customers need to build applications that interact with a variety of datasources, and now you can share an ADO .NET connection between a Windows 32 app and a .NET application. Just because we are focusing on .NET doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten that a large segment of our customer base is still committed to supporting and using many Win32 features, including the DataWindow.

The PowerBuilder RuntimePackager is a tool provided with PowerBuilder Enterprise that packagesthe PowerBuilder files an application needs at runtime into a MicrosoftWindows Installer (MSI) package file. Windows Installer is an installationand configuration service that is installed with more recent MicrosoftWindows operating systems.
You can use the MSI file generated by the Runtime Packageras part of an installation package that includes the other filesthat your application needs.
You must have Microsoft Windows Installer on your system inorder to run the Runtime Packager successfully. The Installer is always availableon Windows XP and Windows 2003.
To get more information and to obtain the latest version ofWindows Installer, see the Microsoft documentation.
The Runtime Packager can be used with client applicationsinstalled on Windows systems and applications deployed to the .NETFramework. It does not package the files required if your applicationuses the DataWindow Web control for ActiveX or a plug-in, and itdoes not install most third-party components. See “Third-party components” for more information.
Sybase Powerbuilder 12.5 Free Download
Make sure that you read the sections referenced in Table 41-2 that applyto your application for more information about where files thatare not installed by the Runtime Packager should be installed.
To use the PowerBuilder Runtime Packager:
- Select Programs>Sybase>PowerBuilder 11.0>PowerBuilderRuntime Packager from the Windows Start menu or launch the pbpack110 executablefile in your SharedPowerBuilder directory.
- Select a location for the generated MSI file.
- If you are deploying a .NET target, select PowerBuilder.NET Components. Otherwise, select PowerBuilder Standard Components.
- Select the database interfaces your applicationrequires. The DLLs for the database interfaces you select are addedto the package. For ODBC and OLE DB, the pbodb110.ini fileis also added. For JDBC, the pbjdbc12110.jar and pbjvm110.dll filesare also added. The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is not added.See “Third-party components”.Other ODBC or OLE DB files your application may require arenot added. For information about deploying these files, see “ODBC database drivers and supporting files” and “OLE DB database providers”.
- If your application uses DataWindow XML exportor import or XML Web DataWindows, check the XML support check box.The Runtime Packager adds PBXerces110.dll, xerces-c_2_6.dll,and xerces-depdom_2_6.dll.
- If your application uses the XML services providedby the PowerBuilder Document Object Model or if it is an EJB orSOAP Web services client, select the appropriate check boxes. The Runtime Packager adds the DLLs, PBXs, and JAR files requiredto the package. The Runtime Packager adds required files for boththe EasySoap and .NET Web service engines when you select the SOAP Clientfor Web Service check box. For more information about required filesfor these services, see “PowerBuilder extensions”.Web service DataWindowsYou can also check the SOAP Client for Web Service box ifyour application uses Web service DataWindows. Two of the filesadded when you check this box, Sybase.PowerBuilder.WebService.Runtime.dll and Sybase.PowerBuilder.WebService.Runtime.RemoteLoader.dll,are also required for Web service DataWindows.
- If your application uses a rich text control orDataWindow, select the Rich Text Support check box.The Runtime Packager installs the files listed for Rich Textsupport in Table 41-5
- Click Create. The Runtime Packager creates an MSI file that includes thefiles required by the components you selected, as well as the runtimeDLLs for standard PowerBuilder applications or the runtime DLLsand .NET assemblies for PowerBuilder .NET applications listed in Table 41-3.

The MSI file is a compressed file that can be executed directlyon any Windows platform. It registers any self-registering DLLs,adds the installation destination path to the Windows Registry, sets the system PATH environment variable, and adds informationto the Registry for the Install/Uninstall page in the WindowsControl Panel. It can also be used in some third-party installation softwarepackages.
For .NET applications, the MSI file installs the .NET assembliesinto the Global Application Cache (GAC). The .NET Framework 2.0must be installed on the target computer. If it is not, the installationstops and an error message displays. If the IE Web Controls requiredfor .NET Web Forms targets are not installed, a warning messagedisplays but installation continues. After you run the MSI fileon a production server for .NET Web Forms applications or Web services,or on a client computer for .NET Windows Forms or smart client applications, you must restart the target system.
Third-party components

PowerBuilder applications have some dependencies on third-party componentsthat are not installed with the Runtime Packager.
NoteSome files must be available on the user’s computerbefore you install the PowerBuilder runtime files. For example, the Microsoft .NET Active Template Library (ATL) module, atl71.dll,must be installed on the user’s computer before the pbjvm110.dll canbe registered.
For the most current information about third-party components, see the Release Bulletin. For information aboutcomponents that can be freely downloaded, see the Sybase Web site. You may be able to redistributesome components provided that you meet the conditions described inthe license.
